The Lupus Power Couple

For more than 30 years, Lupus has shaped my life in ways I never expected — testing my strength, redefining my limits, and forcing me to rebuild myself again and again. I’ve survived kidney failure, dialysis, organ transplant, pain that doesn’t announce itself, and setbacks that would have broken a lesser spirit. But Lupus didn’t take my life; it transformed it. It turned me into an advocate, a mentor, and a voice for men who often suffer in silence.

And then came Shanell.

Together, we built something rare — a partnership forged in faith, humor, grit, and the kind of love that shows up even on the hardest days. She trained with me for home hemo, held me through the uncertainty, and matched my strength with her own. Her journey with Lupus and mine became intertwined, not as a burden, but as a calling.

Today, people know us as the Lupus Power Couple — not because we’re perfect, but because we refuse to quit. We turn our pain into purpose, our challenges into advocacy, and our story into hope for others living with chronic illness. After three decades of fighting Lupus, I’m still standing, still loving, and still building a life with Shanell that proves resilience is powerful — but love is even stronger.
